Magnomatics Magsplit mCVT

The Magsplit mCVT is a next-generation transmission system for hybrid vehicles.  Because the principles of this type of system are quite difficult to express in words, the team at Magnomatics decided that the best way to communicate with their target audience was to do demonstrate their system with moving pictures in the form of a video.    In order to put the system into context we decided to show the system in situ as part of a vehicles complete powertrain to show how it relates to other relevant components in an engine bay such as the crankshaft and differential gear etc.  However because this mCVT device is applicable to all manufacturers of hybrid vehicles, it was very important that Magnomatics was not seen to be favouring any one manufacturer in particular.  For this reason it was decided that the vehicle we would display should be designed and modelled in 3D specifically for this presentation thereby avoiding any risk of revealing any information unnecessarily.

This movie contains quite a few firsts for the team at Think Allowed; apart from being far more complex than anything we have produced to date it contains some interesting examples of intricate animation sequences such as a fully articulated crank-shaft, connecting rod and piston assembly which is seen spinning on screen.  The sequence we are particularly proud of however is the grand finale where the car’s engine and transmission assembly is initially seen in isolation but is quickly joined by the car’s suspension and running gear which is in motion on a road.  The car’s body then appears as it travels away from the camera and is gradually surrounded by darkness.  The camera position then changes and the vehicle is seen accelerating towards the viewer inside a tunnel.  The lighting during this scene is something we were particularly proud of with very effective lens flares from the car headlights and then from the sun as the car emerges from the tunnel into the bright morning sun, symbolising Magnomatics’ journey into the future of automotive technology.
